A ferocious sense of rhythm, engaging vocals, witty guitar and fiddle riffs: the Dan Livingstone Trio has been charming club and festival audiences around Québec with its own brand of roots blues and ragtime since 2004. With veteran double bass player Stephen Barry holding down the bottom end, acoustic musician and lyricist Dan Livingstone on guitar and dobro, and Bernadette Fortin on vocals, violin, and mandolin, this band will take you on a musical journey blending blues and other traditional music from the border of Mexico to the Appalachians and northwards on to Québec and the Maritimes.

The Players

Stephen Barry: With nearly 30 years as a bandleader and sideman, this double bass player and singer is an icon in the Quebec blues community. His phenomenal sense of the 'pocket' (as musicians like to call it), has made him a much sought after sideman. Over his career he has sided Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Hubert Sumlin, Bo Diddley and many other blues luminaries. Playing everything from raucous barrelhouse and swing to down-in-the-mud country and delta blues, Stephen sets the groove for the trio. In 2001, he earned the distinction of being voted Bass Player of the Year by the Toronto Blues Society.

Bernadette Fortin: Montréal born and raised, this prodigious fiddle player and vocalist is the latest addition to the band. After growing up in a family of musicians, where she honed her fiddle skills, Fortin moved on to world beat and eventually the blues. Recreating blues/Cajun fiddle with extraordinary versatility, she breathes new life into this almost forgotten genre. Taking inspiration from such fiddle greats as Joe Venuti, Harry Choates, "Stuff" Smith, and Johnny Gimble, Fortin is establishing herself as someone to watch closely in the Montreal blues community. With her dark contralto vocals and expressive fiddle work, she fills out the top end.

Dan Livingstone: Band leader and guitar virtuoso Dan Livingstone has been receiving acclaim from musicians and audiences in both Europe and North America as a masterful guitarist, dobro player and lyric stylist. Inspired the magic of the Piedmont, Delta and Texas blues traditions, particularly the tunes of Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, Livingstone wows his audiences with expressive phrasing and nimble fingerstyle. It is not his intention to simply play these tunes from a bygone era: through the introduction of swing, West African griot music, Acadian and other rhythms, Livingstone delightfully reinvents the music for the modern imagination. And Livingstone's originals -– very popular with his fans -- are a thoughtful mix of these influences and his own passionate, lyrical style.

Dan Livingstone

Le guitariste de fingerstyle Dan Livingstone est acclamé autant par les musiciens que par les spectateurs comme étant un musicien exceptionnel et aussi un artiste invitant - un jeune joueur de blues à surveiller de près. Qu`il interprète des pièces blues, swing, ou ragtime, son style expressif le définit comme un musicien aux fines oreilles avec une passion pour l'authentique. Dan Livingstone, originaire de la côte ouest du Canada, demeure maintenant à Montréal où il joue régulièrement dans les clubs de la ville.

À l'automne 2004, Dan a fait une tournée en Europe, jouant des les clubs et salles de spectacles en Norvège, en Allemagne et en France. Aussi, on a pu le voir et l'entendre dans de nombreux concerts d'un bout à l'autre du Canada, en vedette à Rimouski en Blues et au Festival International de Blues de Carleton, au Festiblues de Mont-Tremblant, aux jeux Pan Am (1999), et au 16ème Islands Folk Festival sur l'Ile de Vancouver où les spectateurs l'ont désigné comme l'un des meilleurs artistes de l'événement.

Livingstone puise son inspiration dans les traditions envoûtantes du Piedmont, Delta et Texas Blues. En tant qu'artiste, un de ses buts est de plonger ses spectateurs dans la musique du Révérend Gary Davis, de Mississippi John Hurt, de Fred McDowell, et de Robert Johnson. Les compositions de Livingstone - très appréciées par son public - reflètent un mélange de ces influences accompagné d'un style lyrique très développé.

Stephen Barry

Pilier de la scène blues québécoise depuis plus de trente ans, Stephen Barry est un contrabassiste et chanteur hors pair. Son instinct infaillible à créer une ambiance de fond fait de lui un accompagnateur très recherché. Au cours de sa carrière, il a joué aux côtés de Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Hubert Sumlin, Bo Diddley et d’autres grandes vedettes du blues. En 2001, il a été nommé Bassiste de l`Année par la Toronto Blues Society. Qu`il joue du barrelhouse, du swing ou du delta blues, Stephen marque le rythme du trio.

Bernadette Fortin

D’origine montréalaise, cette violoniste est issue d’une famille où la tradition orale maintient bien vivante la musique folklorique. Ayant développé une oreille inouïe, Bernadette se démarque par un sens du rythme poignant qui vient compléter l’essence même de sa musicalité. Faisant preuve de versatilité, elle s’inspire de violonistes issus du jazz, du blues et même du cajun tels que Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith, Lonnie Johnson et Harry Choates. De plus, ses harmonies de voix viennent ajouter à son jeu de violon unique pour faire de Bernadette Fortin une musicienne d’une rare sensibilité.

Le premier album éponyme de Dan Livingstone est paru en Juin 2000. Un deuxième CD enregistré avec Les Polyjesters, intitulé Live on the 8th floor est paru en 2003. La production du troisième album avec le Dan Livingstone Trio est présentement en cours.
